For two years, Touching Lives I and II have responded to the need for breast health education, "free" screenings for eligible women, and travel vouchers in Faulkner County as identified in the Komen Community Profile 2006 for Arkansas. With this grant, Touching Lives III will continue providing these services to women in Faulkner County and several nearby areas, but it will also expand to Perry County. This is because the Komen Community Profile 2009 for Arkansas identifies Perry County as one of three counties that "had significantly higher percentages of Stage IV cancers than the rest of the counties." By expanding services in Perry County, Touching Lives III also addresses one of Komen - Arkansas’s priorities: to "expand education programs in counties with no fixed mammography services." The services in Perry County will include breast heath education, promotion of "free" screenings for eligible women, and vouchers for patients who cannot afford the cost to travel to the CRHS Imaging Center in Conway, AR. Touching Lives III will reach out to women of various ethnic backgrounds and ages. Conway Regional Health System offers a full-service women’s imaging center equipped with the latest technology including digital mammography and breast MRI.

Nationwide, Look Good…Feel Better is recognized for the positive impact it makes upon women cancer patients. Each year, approximately 70 women with breast cancer (primarily low-income) participate in Look Good…Feel Better at Conway Regional Health System (CRHS). Through this program, they learn to handle hair loss, skin and nail problems and the mental stress associated with their medical treatments. They receive cosmetic makeovers and tips in using scarves, wigs and head covers. Since 2002, this CRHS program has been affiliated with the American Cancer Society. A cosmetologist volunteer conducts the monthly makeover sessions. The staff also takes before and after photos. CRHS provides staff, volunteers, facilities and administrative support. The American Cancer Society donates make-up and skin care products. Because CRHS has recently implemented two new programs for breast cancer patients, the number of participants in Look Good…Feel Better will likely increase. Yet even now, CRHS does not have enough wigs, wig care products, head covers, educational materials, and other related essential items for these women. Some women patients who needed these items had to be turned away. This grant provides these supplies and new nutrition and exercise classes for participants in what is otherwise a strong, award-winning program.
