The goal of this project is to increase the probability of early detection of breast cancer for low-income, uninsured women in western Arkansas. The project will provide 50 screening mammograms and 25 follow-up bilateral diagnostic mammograms to patients referred to the Mena Regional Health Systems facility by Healthy Connections, Inc. medical providers working at the Federally Qualified Community Health Center. Evaluation of the project will be accomplished through established referral logs, electronic follow-up by the clinic manager and patient medical histories. Detection rates will be tracked by returned diagnoses and patient follow-up visits. Because Latina women comprise the largest minority group in western Arkansas and many have chosen Healthy Connections Community Health Center as their “medical home” due to its sliding fee cost structure and availability of bi-lingual staff, all forms and questionnaires used in the evaluation will be in English and Spanish. This project covers a critical gap for those women who are ineligible for BreastCare and removes the most significant barrier to screening mammography – cost.
